WHAT IS FORTNITE?
Fortnite is a free online video game, with built-in chat! It was developed by Epic Games in June 2017. It can be played on major consoles (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch), on Microsoft Windows, on MacOS, on iOS (iPhone/iPad), and on Android?
Game modes include Fortnite: Save the World, a cooperative shooter and survival game where up to four players work together to survive and fight hordes of zombies. To do so, they must mine raw materials and build structures. And Fortnite Battle Royale, a free-to-play royal battle game where up to 100 players face off on a vast playing field. They play solo or are organized in teams of two, three or four players. Their objective is to find weapons and ammunition to fight the other players. They can also build walls and towers to protect themselves against their rivals. The more the fight progresses, the fewer players there are and the smaller the playing field becomes. The one who is “killed”, is permanently removed from the game, and so on until there is only one player left to win.
As you can see, there are two distinct modes of play. Lately, however, there is no longer any talk of Fortnite Save the World or Fortnite Battle Royale. The Fortnite Battle Royale mode is called Fortnite for short. The Fortnite Save the World mode is increasingly being abandoned.

- YOU CAN’T TAKE THE ITEMS YOU PICKED UP ON SPAWN ISLAND WITH YOU
As you spawn on Spawn Island, you’ll see weapons, ammunition and building materials scattered everywhere, waiting to be seized. And you can catch them – but they won’t accompany you on the Fortnite map. Think of Spawn Island as a training area for playing Fortnite, even though you’ll probably only be there for a minute or so, while the game fills up with 100 players. You can shoot at anyone nearby, but the guns won’t do any damage, or if you are a temporary pacifist, try building a quick shooting hut (more on how to do this below in point 8).
- WAIT AS LONG AS POSSIBLE BEFORE GETTING OFF THE BATTLE BUS
The Battle Bus horn will sound as soon as you can get off it on the map below, but resist the urge to join the crowd of players who jump off. Instead, wait about 3 seconds before the Battle Bus reaches the end of its flight path, then jump. You’ll have few or no players to fight with for landing spots, which means you’ll have less chance of getting shot at in the first two minutes of the game and less competition for the spoils. Aim for a house or structure when you glide, as chances are there will be a chest or at least some basic loot. Simply hit the roof with your pickaxe to get in.
